Roller Blind Maintenance & Care

  • Easy
  • Soft dry cloth, feather duster or vacuum soft brush, mild detergent, white vinegar
  1. 1

    Regular Dusting

Dust your roller blinds every 4–6 weeks to prevent buildup. Fully extend the blind so the entire fabric surface is accessible. Using a soft dry cloth, feather duster, or vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment, work from the top of the fabric down to the bottom rail. Dust both the front and back of the fabric. Pay particular attention to the corners and edges where dust tends to accumulate. Regular light dusting is far easier than deep cleaning neglected fabric.

  2. 2

    Spot Cleaning

For marks and stains, dampen a clean cloth with water and add a very small amount of mild detergent (approximately a 5% solution — one part detergent to twenty parts water). Blot the stained area gently — do not rub, as rubbing can spread the stain and damage the fabric weave. Work from the outside of the stain inward to prevent spreading. Once the mark has lifted, blot with a clean damp cloth to remove any detergent residue. Allow the fabric to dry completely before rolling the blind up.

  3. 3

    Mould Removal

If mould appears on the fabric (common in bathrooms or high-humidity rooms), spray undiluted white vinegar directly onto the affected area. Leave the vinegar to work for at least one hour — it kills mould spores without damaging most roller blind fabrics. After one hour, wipe the area with a cloth dampened with warm water to remove the dead mould and vinegar residue. Repeat if necessary for stubborn patches. Allow the fabric to dry completely in a well-ventilated area before rolling the blind up. To prevent recurrence, improve ventilation in the room.

    Troubleshooting

Blind will not roll up: The spring tension is likely too loose. Remove the blind from its brackets, partially unroll it, then wind the spring 2–3 turns clockwise by rotating the pin-end of the roller tube. Reinsert and test — repeat if needed. Blind rolls up too fast or snaps up: The spring tension is too tight. Partially unroll the blind (while it is still on the brackets), then remove it from the brackets and hold the roller tube to allow the spring to unwind slightly. Reinsert and test. Chain slipping or skipping: The chain or sprocket gear may be worn. Inspect the chain for stretched or damaged links. If the chain is undamaged but the gear is worn, the mechanism will need to be replaced — contact your supplier. Blind rolling up unevenly or one side dropping lower: Check that both brackets are at exactly the same height using a spirit level. If one bracket has shifted, reposition and re-fix it.

Questions

How often should I clean my roller blinds?
Light dusting every 4–6 weeks is sufficient for most roller blinds. Spot clean stains as soon as they occur — fresh stains are always easier to remove than set ones. Blinds in kitchens or bathrooms may need more frequent attention due to grease and humidity.
Can I use bleach to remove stains or mould?
No. Bleach will damage and discolour most roller blind fabrics, including blockout coatings and sunscreen mesh. Use white vinegar for mould removal and mild detergent for general stains. If in doubt, test any cleaning solution on a small hidden area of the fabric first.
My blind will not stay in the down position — what is wrong?
This usually means the spring tension is too tight. The spring is trying to retract the blind constantly. Remove the blind from the brackets with the fabric partially unrolled, and allow the roller tube to rotate freely to release some spring tension. Reinsert the blind and test again. Repeat until the blind holds position comfortably.
How do I prevent mould on my roller blinds?
Mould grows where moisture and poor airflow combine. In bathrooms and kitchens, always run exhaust fans during and after use. Avoid leaving blinds fully lowered in damp rooms for extended periods. After cleaning bathrooms, raise the blind to allow air circulation. Wipe any condensation from the blind fabric promptly. Choosing a moisture-resistant fabric for high-humidity rooms also significantly reduces mould risk.
