How to measure for curtains
- 10–15 minutes
- Easy
- Metal tape, pencil, step ladder
The track goes on the wall above the window. You measure where the track will be, not the window itself.
- 1
Mark the track height
Pencil a mark where the top of the track will go. About 150 mm above the frame looks balanced; higher makes the window look taller.
TipUnder a cornice? Leave at least 10 mm below it for the brackets, or the curtain will hang lower than planned.
- 2
Measure the frame and add the extension
Measure across the outside of the frame, then add 150–300 mm on each side so the open curtain clears the glass. A 1800 mm frame with 150 mm each side needs a 2100 mm track.
TipOpen, the curtain stacks to about 30% of the track width. The further the track runs past the frame, the less glass the stack covers.
- 3
Measure the drop three times
From your mark to the floor on the left, centre and right. Send the shortest.
TipNew flooring on the way? Measure after it’s down.
- 4
Send the numbers as measured
Track width and drop in millimetres. Pick the heading and how it opens when you order. We recommend the curtain sits just off the floor so the fabric can settle.
Watch outDon’t work out fullness or take anything off. We allow for the heading, track and hem.
Questions
- Do I need to work out fullness?
- No. Send the track width and drop. We allow for the heading, the track and the hem.
- How far past the window should the track run?
- 150–300 mm on each side is typical. Open, the curtain stacks to about 30% of the track width, so a longer track keeps more of the glass clear.
- My floor is uneven. Which drop do I use?
- The shortest of your three. A small gap on the low side is much less noticeable than fabric dragging on the high side.
- Which way should it open?
- Centre opening is two panels that stack on both sides. A left or right stack is one panel that stacks on one side, good next to a wall, bed or door. For free hang options, ask us which suits your space.
